AC Maintenance: Why It Matters More Than You Think
An air conditioning unit that runs quietly through a Prague summer without a single complaint feels like proof it doesn't need attention. In practice, it's usually proof that nobody has looked inside it in over a year. Maintenance on a working unit is easy to postpone precisely because the problems it prevents are invisible until they aren't.
Filters: the simplest thing that gets skipped
A dirty filter is the most common - and most avoidable - cause of an underperforming unit. As dust and dirt build up, airflow drops, the compressor has to work harder to hit the set temperature, and your electricity bill quietly climbs before anyone notices the room isn't actually as cool as it used to be. In an office with continuous daytime use, filters are worth checking every few months, not just once a year at the annual service.
Refrigerant checks: not a job for guesswork
Checking refrigerant levels and looking for leaks is a different matter entirely, and it's not something to attempt yourself or hand to whoever happens to be handy with tools. Refrigerant work legally requires F-gas certified technicians - it's the one part of AC maintenance where certification isn't optional, and it's worth confirming before you book anyone that they actually hold it. A slow leak can run for months without an obvious symptom beyond gradually weaker cooling, which is exactly why it needs a trained eye and the right equipment to catch early.
What neglect actually costs
Skipping maintenance rarely causes a single dramatic failure. More often it shows up as a series of smaller costs that add up faster than expected.
Higher electricity bills - a unit fighting dirty filters and low refrigerant uses noticeably more power to deliver noticeably less cooling.
Shorter compressor life - the compressor is the most expensive part to replace, and it's also the part most affected by running under strain for months at a time.
Breakdowns at the worst possible moment - units that have gone unserviced tend to fail under load, which in Prague means the first real heatwave of the summer, exactly when a technician is hardest to book.
Stale air and odors - a unit that isn't cleaned regularly recirculates dust and can develop a musty smell, which is a comfort problem in an office and a bigger one in a clinic or hotel room.
Seasonal prep: two check-ins a year
Most of this is manageable with two service visits a year rather than one. A spring check before the cooling season starts catches anything that needs attention before the first hot week - low refrigerant, a failing part, a filter that didn't survive winter storage. An autumn visit, before the unit sits idle for months, is the better time to clean it thoroughly and check the parts that only show wear after a full season of heavy use.
Waiting until a unit stops cooling properly to book a service call means competing for appointment slots with everyone else who had the same idea in the same heatwave. Scheduling ahead - ideally on a contract with a fixed twice-yearly visit - is the difference between planned maintenance and an emergency callout.
